About the Project

Communities across New York State are susceptible to the urban heat island effect, which refers to urbanized and developed areas that lack natural green space and experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. DEC, in partnership with SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and Davey Tree, is undertaking a project to develop statewide extreme heat exposure maps and web-based decision support tools to help communities better understand, plan for, and address extreme heat exposures and urban heat islands (UHIs) and their impacts

The tools on this website aim to support identifying of urban heat islands and high temperatures, particularly where there are communities more susceptible to illness or injury in extreme heat.

Temperature data presented in the tools is generated from the i-Tree Cool Air model, an air temperature and humidity model that uses spatial location data. To read more on the temperature modeling with the i-Tree Cool Air model & datasets used, click here.
